increased for the purpose, not only by skilled assistance but

by the employment of two or three Europeans for collecting

specimens of mosquitoes.

Recommendation III. "The establishment of a Central

*Intelligence Eureau for the receipt, compilation and distribut-

"ion of all information collected under (1) and (2)". The exist

ing Bureau of Tropical Medicine would seem to meet this require-

ment and it could equally well provide for the case whether the

enquiry be subject to the guidance of the Royal Society or to

that of the Bureau of Entomology. If necessary, it could be

expanded to meet the demands of India, while the arrangement of

having one bureau for tropical medicine in its various depart-

ments would be a more symmetrical one, apart from the fact that

it is already in being, and has been long enough in existence to

have acquired much experience in affairs of this character. All

infomation would, of course, be forwarded from Hongkong to the

Central Bureau.

Recommendation IV.

1. The Quarantine Regulations have been brought up to

date within the last six months.

2.

The Government do not possess a Clayton apparatus of

their own for the destruction of mosquitoes but this should be

included in the equipment of a quarantine station.

3. Regarding the present arrangements for the inspection

and control of ships in this port: In the opinion of the Health

Officer of the Port improvement would result from the appoint-

ment of two inspectors those duty it would be to accompany the

Health Officer of the Port when that officer is inspecting a

ship in order to see that the passenger and crow accommodation

are in a satisfactory condition and that all hands on board are

mustered for inspection by the Health Officer of the Port. I

understand that this is done in most ports, and it would save

much time and improve the conditions for inspection.

4. "The strengthening of the line of sanitary defence in Fongkong &c." The present quarantine station at Lai Chi Kok
